Plan the outfit around the cold parts of the day
A winter wedding has three temperatures: the walk from the car, the ceremony, and the reception. Plan for all three before choosing the dress.
The walk and the photographs. A structured wool coat in black, camel, charcoal or a deep jewel tone photographs well over a dress; a puffer or sporty jacket does not, and even the walk from the parking lot can end up in pictures. A faux-fur stole, a velvet wrap or a wool cape is enough for short transfers.
The ceremony. Churches and older buildings are often drafty and cold for the time you sit still; ballrooms with high ceilings can run cool. Long sleeves, or a jacket that stays on, solve it.
The reception. Usually warm, sometimes very. A dress that works without its outer layer, such as a long-sleeve velvet midi or a satin dress with a jacket you can remove, covers both.
Check whether there is a coat check. If not, at some barns, tents and halls, you will drape the coat over a chair all evening, so bring one you do not mind creasing. Do not plan to leave it in the car if the ceremony and reception are at different sites.
Velvet: what to buy and what to skip
Velvet is the defining winter fabric. It is warm, it holds deep color, and its pile catches candlelight and warm venue lighting in a way flat fabrics cannot. It works at every formality from semi-formal to black tie. The difference between velvet that looks expensive and velvet that looks cheap is easy to spot once you know what to check.
Pile density. Dense, even pile reads rich under low light. Thin velvet where the base fabric shows through when stretched reads cheap in any room. If the listing has close-up photos, look at the surface at a seam.
Fiber. Silk velvet and rayon-silk blends drape fluidly and are the ones worth spending on. Polyester velvet is the most common at lower prices; it can look good in a structured cut and deep color. Stretch velvet is comfortable and easy to fit but clings; it suits a wrap or A-line better than a slinky column.
Finish. Smooth velvet in a structured cut suits black tie. Crushed velvet has a more relaxed, textured look that suits semi-formal and holiday parties.
Care. Velvet crushes where you sit and marks if pressed flat. Hang it, steam it from the inside rather than ironing it, and pack it rolled or on a hanger in a garment bag.

Jewel tones: choosing emerald, sapphire, burgundy or plum
Jewel tones are the natural winter palette, and wedding guests clearly reach for them: in 10,700 r/Weddingattireapproval posts analyzed by weddinggueststyle.com (16 April to 21 October 2026), burgundy came up in 147 posts, emerald in 54 and plum in 38, and 47 posts used the phrase "jewel tone" itself.
How to choose among them:
Emerald is the most festive and the easiest to accessorize with gold. It can clash with a heavily green-and-red Christmas reception, so check the decor if the wedding has a theme.
Sapphire and deep blue are the most versatile, easy to wear by candlelight and less severe than black.
Burgundy, wine and garnet are warm, rich and suit velvet especially well. They can coincide with the bridesmaids' color, so ask about the wedding party's palette if you can.
Plum and amethyst are slightly less expected and work well with silver or pewter accessories.
Metallics pair with all of them: gold warms emerald and burgundy, silver cools sapphire and plum. Black and navy are always appropriate for a winter evening; give black a texture, such as velvet, lace or jacquard, and one metallic accent so it reads celebratory. For guests who want to avoid the expected dark palette, deep teal, copper and icy blue work in a heavy fabric. The color that does not work is winter white: it is everywhere in the shops in December and still the bride's color.
Length, tights and shoes
A midi that ends between mid-calf and just above the ankle is the most practical winter length: it sits neatly under a coat and clears wet ground. Floor-length suits evening and black tie, provided it clears the floor in the shoes you will wear. Above the knee is possible with opaque tights and a substantial sleeve, but it reads less formal.
Tights are entirely appropriate at a winter wedding, including a formal one. Sheer tights around 15 to 20 denier in a matched skin tone are nearly invisible and add warmth; opaque tights in black or a deep color under a dark midi are a clear styling choice and look smart with a block heel. Avoid shiny finishes, a mismatched tone and a reinforced toe visible in an open shoe.
For shoes, closed-toe pumps, heeled ankle boots and pointed block heels suit winter, in suede, velvet, satin or metallic finishes. For snow or ice, wear practical boots to the venue and change on arrival.
Winter wedding guest dresses under each dress code
The season changes the fabric and the sleeve. It does not change what the dress code asks for, so start from the invitation's wording and the Emily Post lists, then adapt them for the cold.
Black tie. Emily Post lists a formal floor-length evening gown, a dressy cocktail dress or your dressiest little black dress. In winter that becomes a velvet column, a heavy satin A-line or a long-sleeve beaded gown, and the shorter options become a strong choice in a cold climate where a long gown under a coat is a lot to manage. Semi-formal and cocktail. Emily Post files the cocktail dress under semi-formal, with a little black dress, a long dressy skirt and top, or dressy separates, and advises erring formal after 6 p.m. A long-sleeve velvet or crepe midi with opaque tights and a block heel covers almost every winter semi-formal or cocktail wedding. Festive or holiday attire. Emily Post's festive list adds a dressy pants outfit and tells guests to feature holiday colors, which is the one code where red, green, gold and sparkle are being asked for rather than tolerated. Christmas and New Year's Eve weddings have their own section below.
Dressy casual and casual. A sweater dress in a fine knit, a ponte midi or a knit skirt with a silk blouse, with boots, suits a relaxed daytime winter wedding. Keep chunky cable knits and denim for another day.
Warm metallics, such as gold jewelry, champagne heels and a metallic clutch, suit the deep winter palette at every level from cocktail upward.
What the winter posts show
Winter questions skew formal. In our analysis of 10,700 r/Weddingattireapproval posts, 207 mentioned winter, December, January, February or snow. Of those, 53 were flaired Formal and 49 Black/White Tie, so 102 of 207, or 49 percent, were at the two most formal codes, against 32 percent of all posts (3,458 of 10,700). Cocktail or No Dress Code followed with 42 and Semi Formal/Dressy Casual with 21.
The practical worries come through in the text as well. Within the 207 winter posts, a wrap, shawl, stole, shrug or bolero came up in 14, a coat in 12, a blazer or jacket in 10, velvet in 9, fur or faux fur in 8 and boots in 7; words for the cold itself (cold, freezing, chilly, warm enough) appeared in 19. Most posts are a photo and a short question, so these are small numbers, but they point at the same answer as the advice above: settle the formality first, then solve the layer.

Check five things in a winter listing
A winter dress bought online has more ways to disappoint than a summer one, because warmth is the one property a photo cannot show.
1. The fiber line. Velvet, wool crepe, heavy satin, ponte and brocade carry the season. A listing that says only "polyester" with no weave named is often a thin knit. Look for a weight word in the description, such as heavyweight, double-layered or lined, and check the close-up photos for show-through at the seams.
2. The sleeve lining. Sheer chiffon, mesh and lace sleeves look wintry in the photo and give almost no warmth. If warmth matters, choose a lined or solid sleeve, or plan the layer.
3. Stretch. A few percent elastane lets you sit through a ceremony with a coat on your lap and still look smooth at dinner. Rigid brocade and duchess satin need an accurate size, so measure bust, waist and hips and order by the chart rather than by your usual label.
4. Length against your shoes. Winter shoes are often a block heel or a boot. Measure from shoulder to hem in those shoes and compare it with the listed length, so a midi sits above the boot shaft rather than on it.
5. Delivery and returns over the holidays. December parcels move slowly. If a seller states no shipping time, the FTC's mail-order rule gives it 30 days to ship, so order early, look for a firm delivery date, and confirm the return window outlasts the wedding date in case you need an exchange.
Snow, rain and the venue
The venue decides how much of the cold you meet.
Church or chapel. Expect to sit still in a cool room for up to an hour, and Emily Post suggests asking whether bare shoulders or arms would offend at a house of worship. A long sleeve or a jacket that stays on solves both.
Barn, tent or farm. These are the coldest winter venues and often have no coat check. Choose a dress that works under a dressed layer such as a velvet blazer or a wool cape, and shoes that cope with gravel or frozen ground.
Hotel ballroom or restaurant. Usually warm once inside. A coat for the door and a dress that works bare-armed at the reception is enough.
Warm-weather winter. A January wedding in South Florida, Southern California, Arizona or the Caribbean is a winter wedding on the calendar only. Follow the dress code with mid-weight fabrics such as crepe or satin, keep velvet for a cool evening, and bring a wrap for air-conditioning rather than snow.
Snow and slush. Wear boots to the venue and change into the dress shoes there; a tote bag for the boots fits under most chairs. Floor-length hems pick up salt and slush on the walk in, so lift the skirt or choose a midi. Hang the dress in a garment bag in the car rather than folding it, because velvet and satin crease where they are pressed.
Christmas, holiday and New Year's Eve weddings
A wedding in the weeks around Christmas or on New Year's Eve is a winter wedding with permission to sparkle. Dress to the code the invitation names, then let the season show in the color and the finish.
Christmas and holiday weddings. The Emily Post Institute's festive attire list (a cocktail dress, a long dressy skirt and top, a dressy pants outfit or separates, or a little black dress) ends with an instruction to feature holiday colors, so red, deep green, gold and tartan are at home rather than merely tolerated. Etiquette expert Elaine Swann told Who What Wear that red is a very festive color that goes quite well at fall and holiday-season weddings. Two checks come first: whether the wedding party is in red or green, and whether the couple's family tradition makes red the bride's color, as Swann notes for Chinese and Indian weddings. A velvet midi in wine or emerald, a satin skirt with a fine-knit top, or a black dress with a gold shoe all suit a December reception.
New Year's Eve weddings. These run late and usually lean formal, so dress for an evening event: a floor-length gown or a dressy cocktail dress if the card says black tie, and sequins, beading or metallics anywhere from cocktail upward. If the midnight toast moves to a terrace or the street, bring a real coat rather than a wrap.
What stays off the list is the same as at any winter wedding: winter white, ivory and pale silver sequins that bounce back white under a flash. Novelty prints, light-up accessories and Santa hats belong to the office party, not the ceremony.
Winter white, black and red
Three color questions come up every winter, and each has a clear answer.
Winter white, ivory, cream and pale champagne look seasonal in the shops and still belong to the bride. A winter white coat is worth avoiding too, because it is the layer people see in the ceremony arrival photos.
Black is the easiest color at a winter evening wedding and is named in the black tie lists as the little black dress. Give it velvet, lace or jacquard texture and one bright or metallic accent.
Red is welcome at most American weddings.
