Does the invitation tell you more than it says?
Yes, and mostly in the parts that aren't the dress code line.
Venue name first. A historic hotel ballroom, a members' club, or anywhere carrying the word estate pulls the whole room upward. A vineyard, a barn, or a beach club pulls it down, whatever the card says underneath.
Then timing. A ceremony at six or later almost always means dinner, speeches and a dance floor, and that combination rewards a longer hem and a sturdier shoe. Anything beginning before four is a daytime wedding wearing formal clothing, which is a genuinely different event.
