The Emily Post Institute's attire guide gives women four options for black tie optional: a formal floor-length evening gown, a dressy cocktail dress, a little black dress, or dressy separates. Compare that with full black tie, which lists a floor-length gown, a dressy cocktail dress, or your dressiest little black dress. The difference is small. Optional adds dressy separates and relaxes the little black dress from your dressiest to simply a good one. The word optional is mostly about the men, for whom a dark suit becomes acceptable in place of a tuxedo.
So a midi or a knee-length dress is not a compromise here; it is on the list, as long as it is a dressy cocktail dress. The test is whether the dress would look at home at an evening party in a hotel ballroom. A matte cotton shift would not; the same cut in duchess satin would.
Read the start time too. Emily Post advises erring toward formality for semi-formal events after 6 p.m., and the same logic applies here: a six o'clock ceremony followed by dinner and dancing rewards a longer hem and a more formal fabric than a two o'clock ceremony with the same wording. Choose a fabric that reads formal at night
Velvet absorbs light instead of reflecting it, so it looks rich under warm reception lighting and flat at a midday ceremony. Keep it for evening weddings from autumn through winter.
Silk crepe and heavy triple georgette are among the safest choices. They have enough weight to hang straight, they do not crease badly across the lap during a seated dinner, and they photograph as a clean block of color.
Duchess satin is beautiful and unforgiving. It throws a hard band of light along every curve, and a camera flash can blow that band out to white. If you love satin, a matte-face satin is easier to wear.
Chiffon needs a good lining. Unlined chiffon over a nude slip can turn semi-transparent under uplighting. Sequins are welcome at this code, provided they are stitched rather than glued and the base fabric is heavy enough to carry their weight without sagging off the shoulder.
Where should the hem fall?
Floor-length: aim for the hem to sit about half an inch off the floor in the shoes you will actually wear. A hem that pools gets stepped on by the third dance.
Midi: placement matters more than the label. The best point is the narrowest part of the calf, usually mid-calf or just below. A hem that stops at the widest part of the calf shortens the leg in photographs.
Tea-length, just above the ankle bone, is an underused option and an especially good one for a daytime version of this code.
Knee-length works when the dress is clearly a cocktail dress: a formal fabric, a defined shape, evening shoes. Above the knee is the length most likely to feel underdressed at an evening reception.
Check the construction, and the listing, before you commit
A formal dress shows its quality from a distance. Look at the lining first: it should run to the hem in something smooth, not stop at the hip. An exposed plastic zipper up the back of an otherwise formal dress is visible in every photo taken from behind. Boning that ripples through the fabric when you sit will ripple all evening. And be wary of anything sold as formal that weighs almost nothing; a gown that folds down to the size of a paperback will hang like a nightgown.
If the dress needs altering, allow time. Shortening a lined formal dress means shortening the lining separately, and taking in a boned bodice means opening it up. Book the tailor before you order, and work backward to your order date.
When you are buying online, the product page has to answer the questions a fitting room would. Before ordering, check:
- Fiber content. "Satin" on a listing can mean silk or polyester; both are fine, but a polyester satin under 100 percent synthetic lining can be warm through a long dinner. Look for the composition line, not the dress name.
- Length in inches, measured from the shoulder or the high point of the bodice, and the model's height. Compare both with your own measurement in the shoes you plan to wear; a "maxi" cut for a model of 5 foot 10 is a tea-length on someone of 5 foot 3.
- Whether the dress is lined, and to where. "Partially lined" usually means the bodice only.
- The closure. An invisible zipper reads more formal than an exposed one, and a long row of buttons needs someone to help you into it.
- The return window, counted against the wedding date. If you are ordering two sizes to try at home, both need to arrive, be tried in your real shoes and go back in time.

Adjust for the hour, the season and the venue
The words on the card stay the same from a June garden to a December ballroom; the right dress does not.
