Which green? Sage, olive, emerald and dark green compared
"Green" covers four quite different dresses, and they suit different invitations. Sage is a soft gray-green that reads as a pastel; it belongs to daytime, spring and garden weddings. Olive is a muted yellow-brown green that sits with the autumn palette. Emerald is a deep, saturated blue-green that looks like a jewel tone and carries formal and evening dress codes well. Dark or forest green is close to black-green and is the most formal-looking of the four, a natural fit for black tie optional and winter evenings.
In our analysis of 10,700 posts on r/Weddingattireapproval (16 April – 21 October 2026), 630 posts mention green. Sage is the most named shade (100 posts), then dark or forest green (72), olive (69) and emerald (54), with mint far behind (13). Every dress-code flair except the small Casual one (3.2%) carries green at a similar rate, between 4.9% of Black/White Tie posts and 6.6% of Special Dress Code posts, so there is no code where a green dress looks out of place. The shade is what changes.
Retail color names do not line up neatly with these four. "Army green" on a listing usually sits near olive, "hunter" and "bottle" near forest, and "sage" can mean anything from a gray-green to a mint, so read the photo rather than the name.

Green wedding guest dresses by dress code
The Emily Post Institute's attire guide lists garments for each code, never color, so a green dress follows the same rules as any other. What green adds is a shade choice that should rise with the formality.
Black tie. The guide's black tie options are a floor-length evening gown, a dressy cocktail dress or the dressiest little black dress you own. In green that means emerald or forest in satin, velvet, heavy crepe or a dense chiffon, floor-length if you can; a very dressy emerald cocktail dress is the shorter option the guide allows. Sage chiffon at floor length tends to read as a bridesmaid dress in an evening room, which is the one thing a black tie guest in green wants to avoid. Black tie optional and formal. A floor-length gown or a polished midi in a deep green. This is where forest and bottle green earn their place: they read as formal as navy without being navy.
Cocktail and semi-formal. Sage and mint belong to daylight
Sage is a soft gray-green that behaves like a pastel. It sits naturally beside eucalyptus, white flowers, natural wood and linen, which makes it a fit for spring and summer garden, vineyard and outdoor daytime weddings. Mint is lighter and brighter again and stays firmly in spring and summer.
Choose fabrics that keep sage soft: chiffon, organza, lightweight crepe and silk. Heavy satin and velvet can make it look muddy, so save those for the deeper greens. Silver, rose gold or nude accessories suit sage's cool undertone better than yellow gold; blush shoes and bags are a gentle pairing, and burgundy or plum accessories give a stronger contrast if you wear sage into early fall.
The palest sages carry the one real risk in the green family. Of the 100 sage posts in our data, 6 were filed under the subreddit's "Is this too white?" flair, and 2 of the 13 mint posts were. A gray-green with very little pigment can look silver-white under camera flash. Photograph the dress next to something truly white in daylight; if the green almost disappears, choose a deeper sage.
Sage fades out of season after September. For October and November, move to olive, moss or forest green instead.
Olive is the autumn and rustic green
Olive is a muted yellow-brown green that belongs to the autumn palette and to relaxed venues: casual fall weddings, barns, vineyards and rustic outdoor celebrations. It is less formal than emerald or forest green and pairs naturally with warm materials, including brown or cognac leather, gold jewelry and tan shoes.
Olive works well in matte fabrics such as crepe, satin-back crepe, cotton blends and fine knits, and as a slip or midi with a leather or suede accessory at a daytime fall wedding. A smocked or tiered olive midi is about as casual as a wedding dress should go; for a semi-formal evening, choose a cleaner crepe sheath or wrap.
Olive is also the green that can turn drab. Next to a sallow or olive complexion, a flat olive can drain color from the face. A deeper olive with some sheen, or a move to forest, usually fixes it. For a formal fall evening, choose dark olive in velvet or forest green in satin.
Emerald and forest green: the evening greens
Emerald is a deep, saturated blue-green with the presence of a jewel tone, and it carries formality better than any other green. An emerald floor-length gown in satin or heavy chiffon is a strong alternative to black and navy at black tie. A-line and column silhouettes work well because the color does most of the visual work, so keep the jewelry restrained. At cocktail weddings, an emerald midi in crepe, velvet or structured satin holds the color well at a shorter length.
Forest, hunter and pine greens sit close to black-green and are the most formal-looking greens of all. They are seasonal from September through February. In velvet, heavy satin or brocade, a dark green midi or gown looks rich without reading as a holiday costume, even at a winter wedding that is not Christmas-themed. At a December wedding, avoid bright red accessories unless the couple has asked for a red-and-green palette.
Gold jewelry is the classic pairing for both; black or metallic shoes keep them sharp. Watch for the darkest forest greens in flat crepe under dim reception light: they can read as black across the room. Velvet or satin keeps the green visible because the surface catches light.
Check the bridesmaids, then the listing
Green's real failure is not etiquette but coincidence. In our data, 105 of the 630 posts mentioning green (16.7%) also mention bridesmaids, against 479 of all 10,700 posts (4.5%). Guests in green clearly worry about matching the bridal party, and the worry is reasonable. Before you buy, ask the couple or a member of the wedding party what the bridesmaids are wearing, or check the wedding website. If they are in green, move two shades away (sage to emerald, olive to forest) or choose another color family; a guest in the bridesmaids' exact shade looks like part of the wedding party in photos.
Then read the listing before you order:
• Look at the photo, not the color name. "Green" and "sage" cover very different dresses from one seller to the next.
• Check the fabric content. Polyester satin in emerald can look high-shine under flash; crepe and velvet look deeper.
• Look for a lining in pale greens. Thin sage chiffon can turn sheer in afternoon sun.
• Read the slit and neckline details. Many fitted green maxis are cut with a high slit, which is fine at an evening cocktail party but draws attention at a daytime or religious ceremony.
• Check the returns.
