Wear a dark suit (navy or charcoal), a dress shirt, a tie, leather dress shoes and dark dress socks. That is the men's list the Emily Post Institute gives for this level. Before 6 p.m. a mid-gray suit or a blazer with gray trousers also works; after 6 p.m., stay dark and keep the tie on. A tuxedo is too much, and jeans or sneakers are too little.
Cocktail attire for men sits in the middle of the dress-code ladder: dressier than the office, a clear step below black tie. The Emily Post Institute files cocktail under semi-formal and lists the same pieces for both: a dark business suit, an optional matching vest, a dress shirt, a tie, leather dress shoes and dark dress socks. The questions men actually get stuck on are the edges. Can the tie go? Does a gray suit count at night? Is a blazer enough? What changes at a wedding? Below are clear rules for each, sorted by time of day and season, plus what to do when the invitation is vague.

What men's cocktail attire actually is
Cocktail is a dress code for a suit. The Emily Post Institute does not give it a separate entry. It places cocktail dresses inside semi-formal, and its men's list for that level is short and specific: a dark business suit, an optional matching vest, a dress shirt, a tie, leather dress shoes and dark dress socks. It adds one timing rule that matters more than any garment: for events after 6 p.m., dress more formally.
That makes cocktail one rung above dressy casual, where a sport coat or blazer with slacks is enough and the tie is optional, and one rung below black tie optional, where a tuxedo becomes welcome. Know those two neighbors and you know the edges of the code. If your outfit would also pass at dressy casual, it is probably too relaxed for cocktail. If it would pass at black tie, it is too much.
Retailer guides tend to describe cocktail as loosely as possible, because a looser code sells more separates. The etiquette source is stricter. Read the word "cocktail" on an invitation as "wear a suit, and make it a good one." Color, pattern and accessories are where you get freedom. Whether to wear a jacket is not.
It also helps to know what the code is not asking for. Cocktail attire for men does not require a three-piece suit, a white shirt, a dark tie or black shoes. The vest is listed as optional, and nothing on the list fixes the shirt color or the tie pattern. A navy suit with a pale-blue shirt, a burgundy tie and brown shoes meets the code just as well as a charcoal suit with white and black. The fixed points are the structure: matching jacket and trousers, a collared dress shirt, a tie, leather shoes, dark socks. Everything else is taste.
Do you need a tie for cocktail attire?
Plan on it. The Emily Post list for this level includes a tie, and the lists that make the tie optional are dressy casual and business casual, both a step lower. So an open collar under a suit lands you at the bottom edge of the code. It can be fine at a daytime garden party. It is noticeably underdressed at an evening wedding reception where most men will be in ties.
The practical rule:
• Evening, indoors, or a wedding: wear the tie.
• Daytime, outdoors, hot weather, and the invitation or wedding website says something like "cocktail, ties optional": the tie can go, but keep the suit, a crisp collar and real dress shoes.
• Unsure: wear it. You can take a tie off and put it in a pocket once the dancing starts. You cannot add one you left at home.
If you skip the tie, the rest of the outfit has to work harder. A spread or semi-spread collar that holds its shape, a pocket square and polished shoes keep an open-collar suit looking deliberate rather than forgotten. A button-down collar with no tie reads as office wear.
What counts as a tie here is a regular necktie in silk, wool or knit. A black bow tie belongs to the tuxedo, and wearing one with a business suit signals that you mistook the code.
Which suits pass: a color-by-color verdict
Emily Post's word is "dark," and in practice that means navy and charcoal. Both work at any hour, in any season, at any venue. They are also the safest choice when the code is just "cocktail" with nothing else to go on. Lighter suits are a daytime option. Black is the one men argue about. A black business suit is not wrong, but in the evening it can read as a tuxedo stand-in, and at a daytime wedding it can feel severe. Navy does the same job without either problem.

Adjust for the clock and the season
Time of day matters more than anything else on the invitation. The Emily Post Institute's wedding-guest chart splits semiformal men's wear by hour: daytime allows a dark suit, or a blazer with gray flannels and a tie; evening is simply a dark suit. Wikipedia's summary of Western dress codes draws the same line at 6 p.m. Season changes the fabric and the shade, not the structure.
In summer, a lightweight wool or wool-linen suit in a mid-blue or gray keeps the code without overheating, and in daylight a lighter shade is fine. In winter, flannel and heavier worsteds in charcoal or navy look right, and a dark tie in wool or grenadine adds texture. Spring and fall sit in between. Navy is never wrong in either.

Shoes, socks and the small things that decide it
Most outfits that miss the cocktail code miss it at the feet. Emily Post names leather dress shoes and dark dress socks, which rules out sneakers, including clean white leather ones, as well as boat shoes and sandals. Oxfords are the most formal choice and the right one after dark. Derbies and plain-toe lace-ups sit just below and are fine anywhere. Polished leather or suede loafers work in daylight and in warm weather. Match the belt to the shoes, and keep the socks long enough that no skin shows when you sit.
The smaller details carry the rest:
• Shirt: pressed, long-sleeved, white or pale blue for evening. Subtle stripes or a mid-blue work in daylight.
• Fit: trousers that just touch the shoe and a jacket that closes without pulling matter more than the price of the suit. If the suit is old, a tailor visit is the best money you can spend before the wedding.
• Pocket square: optional and encouraged, especially if the tie is off.
• Watch and cufflinks: optional. Keep them simple.
• Outerwear: a dark overcoat in winter. A puffer or rain shell over a suit looks like a commute, so leave it in the car or cloakroom.
Cocktail attire for men at a wedding, and the "casual cocktail" variant
A wedding is a more formal setting than a cocktail party with the same code, for two reasons. The ceremony may be in a house of worship, and the hosts are being photographed all night. Emily Post's wedding guidance says the invitation and the time of the wedding are your best guide to how formal it is. In practice that means three adjustments:
• If the ceremony is in a church, synagogue, mosque or temple, keep the jacket on and the tie up through the service. Check whether the couple's religion or culture expects a head covering. Emily Post raises that question too.
• Stay off white and ivory head-to-toe. A white dinner jacket belongs to black tie in warm climates, not to a cocktail wedding.
• Coordinate with a partner by formality, not by color. If your partner is in a cocktail dress, a tie-less suit can look underdone beside it.
"Casual cocktail" and "cocktail casual" are not codes the etiquette sources define. Hosts use them to mean "suit, but relax." Read them as the bottom edge of cocktail: a suit or a well-matched blazer and trousers, the tie optional, loafers allowed. Even here, keep a jacket and leather shoes. Those two items are what separate cocktail from dressy casual. If the wording makes you guess, the couple's wedding website or a short message to someone in the wedding party settles it in a minute.
What men ask about most: 244 cocktail posts, counted
In our analysis of 10,700 posts on r/Weddingattireapproval (16 April – 21 October 2026), we flagged posts whose title or text mentions a man's outfit or a male partner (husband, boyfriend, fiancé, tux, groomsman, men's, guy or male). That gave 1,171 posts, 10.9% of the total. Of the 2,442 posts flaired "Cocktail or No Dress Code," 244 matched. Within those 244 we counted how many mention each garment word at least once.
The suit dominates, as it should: 51 posts. Navy, the color named most often, comes next at 24. The rest are boundary questions. Jeans (14) and tuxedos (7) both turn up, and they sit at opposite ends of the code. That fits the pattern above: men rarely doubt the suit itself. They doubt whether they can go a step up or a step down from it. The answer is almost always to stay at the suit. A suit is the center of cocktail attire for men, and the questions that go furthest wrong are the ones that try to replace it.

Our count of 244 r/Weddingattireapproval posts (16 Apr – 21 Oct 2026) that mention a man's outfit or male partner and carry the "Cocktail or No Dress Code" flair. A post counts once per word if the title or text contains it (case-insensitive regex). Mentions, not outfits worn. Read 22 October 2026.
Unsure? Run these four checks
1. Read the time. Starts after 6 p.m.? Navy or charcoal suit, tie on, black or dark brown lace-ups. Done.
2. Read the venue. A house of worship, a hotel ballroom or a city restaurant pushes you to the formal end. A vineyard, a garden or a beach in daylight lets you lighten the suit and, if the hosts say so, drop the tie.
3. Read the rest of the invitation. Heavy card, engraved type or "black tie optional" printed elsewhere means the couple expects more than the minimum. A wedding website with a relaxed dress-code note means they mean it.
4. Picture the room. If you'd be the only man without a jacket, put it on. Being a little overdressed at a wedding is mildly awkward for a minute. Being clearly underdressed is noticed in every photo.
If the invitation names no dress code at all and the reception is in the evening, dress to cocktail anyway. A dark suit and tie is the most adaptable outfit a man can wear to a wedding. For the full ladder from white tie down to casual, see the men's wedding dress code guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to help you find the perfect wedding guest dress.
A dark business suit with a dress shirt, a tie, leather dress shoes and dark dress socks. A matching vest is optional. That is the Emily Post Institute's list for the semi-formal level, where it files cocktail. After 6 p.m., stay with navy or charcoal and keep the tie on.
In daylight, a blazer with gray trousers and a tie is listed by Emily Post for a semiformal daytime wedding, so a blazer with well-pressed dress trousers can pass. Chinos and an open collar move you down to dressy casual. For an evening event, wear a full suit.
Yes. A tuxedo belongs to black tie and black tie optional. At a cocktail event it will look like you misread the invitation, and at a wedding it can blur with the groom's party. Wear a dark suit instead.
No. Jeans sit at dressy casual and casual on the Emily Post guide. Even dark, well-fitted denim under a blazer reads one rung too low for cocktail, especially at a wedding. Choose suit trousers or wool dress trousers.
