What counts as a semi-formal dress
The Emily Post Institute describes semi-formal as more formal than office wear but less formal than a formal event, and lists for women "a short afternoon or cocktail dress," "a 'little black dress'," "a long dressy skirt and top," and "dressy separates." Two practical points follow from the list. Length is flexible: knee-length to midi is the core, and a long dressy skirt with a top is explicitly allowed. What tips you out of the code is a formal, floor-length evening gown, which Emily Post lists under black tie. And fabric does most of the work: a semi-formal dress should look clearly dressier than everyday clothes without the weight of a ball gown.
Semi-formal wedding guest dresses or cocktail dresses?

The sources do not agree on the order. The Emily Post Institute has no separate cocktail heading and lists "a short afternoon or cocktail dress" under semi-formal, so on that reading the two are one code. Ever-Pretty's semi-formal collection, one of the shops ranking for this search, describes semi formal as "typically more relaxed than cocktail". Both reflect how people use the words; they simply start from different places.
The safe move is a dress that satisfies both readings: knee to midi length, a fabric with weight or a soft sheen (crepe, medium satin, lined lace), and heels or dressy block heels. That dress is right whether the couple meant semi-formal as a step below cocktail or as the same thing. The posts also show which way guests lean when unsure. 128 of the 1,413 asked about being overdressed, too formal or too fancy, against 93 that asked about being too casual or underdressed. Structured or fluid: two correct readings
Semi-formal can be read in two quite different ways, and both are right. Choosing the one that fits the wedding in front of you is most of the decision.
The structured reading is a knee-length cocktail dress in a fabric that holds its shape, such as heavy crepe or satin, with a seamed or peplum bodice and a defined waist. Pumps or heeled sandals in nude or metallic, polished hair and coordinated jewelry finish it. It reads as a shorter version of evening dress and suits a city venue, a hotel, a restaurant or an evening reception.
The fluid reading is a midi in a lighter fabric such as silk-blend, lined chiffon or, for warm outdoor events, cotton-rayon, with a defined but soft waist: a smocked bodice, a wrap, or an empire line. Block-heel sandals or low pumps, soft waves or a low knot, and one statement accessory rather than a matching set. It suits gardens, vineyards, barns and daytime ceremonies.
The venue usually decides. Stilettos and a stiff knee-length dress are hard work on grass or gravel, while a floaty cotton-rayon midi can look underdressed in a ballroom after dark. If the ceremony and reception are in different settings, dress for the one where you will spend longest. Keep the styling in proportion: a fluid dress with elaborate matched jewelry, or a structured one with flat beach sandals, is where semi-formal outfits start to look confused.
Fit matters more in the structured reading. Crepe first: the fabrics that carry semi-formal
Crepe is the most dependable semi-formal fabric. It holds its shape, resists creasing, and has a clean, matte finish that reads as deliberately dressy. Medium-weight satin adds a soft sheen without tipping into black tie. Structured, lined lace is clearly celebratory. Lined chiffon suits lighter, daytime and outdoor weddings.

Daytime, evening and the in-between
Start time shifts where you land in the code. Emily Post's note is to lean more formal for events after 6 p.m.
For a daytime semi-formal wedding, lighter fabrics, brighter colors and printed dresses all fit: a printed crepe midi, a structured sundress in a good fabric, or a lined chiffon A-line with polished accessories.
Prints belong mostly to daytime: florals, abstracts and subtle geometrics in a dressy fabric all work. For the evening, choose a darker-ground print or a solid with texture, such as lace or jacquard.
For an evening semi-formal wedding, darker or richer colors, more sheen and stronger jewelry move you toward the cocktail end: a satin midi, a lace cocktail dress, a crepe fit-and-flare, or the little black dress Emily Post names.
Many weddings start in late afternoon and run into the evening. A mid-toned dress in crepe or medium-weight satin covers both halves, and an accessory change, such as a bolder earring or a metallic clutch for the reception, does the rest.
What to look for in a semi-formal listing
Product photos make most dresses look dressy, so the description and the zoomed images do the real work. Before ordering, check:
• The fabric name. "Crepe", "scuba crepe", "satin" and "lined lace" signal the body semi-formal needs. "Stretch knit", "jersey" or "T-shirt fabric" without a real design detail usually reads as office or weekend wear.
• The sheen. Matte crepe and soft-sheen satin suit both day and evening. High-gloss charmeuse in a long length starts to look like an evening gown, and all-over sequins belong after dark.

Buy where the return terms are clear.
