For most beach weddings, wear a lightweight suit in linen, cotton or tropical wool, in tan, light gray or a mid-blue. Add a breathable dress shirt and leather or suede loafers, and add a tie if the code is formal or the reception is in the evening. Save tailored shorts and sandals for invitations that say casual. At black tie by the sea, Emily Post's answer is a white dinner jacket.
Mens wedding attire for beach ceremonies depends on the dress code first and the sand second. "Beach" tells you where the wedding is. It does not tell you how formal it is, and a beach invitation can mean anything from shorts and a linen shirt to a dinner jacket. The Emily Post Institute's attire guide covers both ends. Its casual list allows Bermuda shorts and sandals depending on occasion and climate, and its black tie entry swaps in a white dinner jacket in summer, in the tropics or on a cruise. This guide lays out the four codes you are likely to see at the coast, what each asks of a man, and how to handle heat, wind and sand without dropping a rung.

Verdicts apply The Emily Post Institute's Attire Guide (casual: shorts and sandals depending on occasion and climate; black tie: white dinner jacket in summer, the tropics or on a cruise), read 22 October 2026. Notes are our editorial guidance.
Start with the invitation, not the coastline
The most common mistake in men's beach wear for a wedding is dressing for the location instead of the code. A couple can marry on the sand at 4 p.m. and hold a black-tie dinner in the resort ballroom at 7. Another couple can host the whole day barefoot. The beach setting changes the fabric, the color and the shoes. The dress code decides the structure: jacket or no jacket, tie or no tie, trousers or shorts.
So read three things before you pack. First, the dress code wording: casual, dressy casual or "beach chic," beach formal, or black tie. Second, the time. The Emily Post Institute's wedding guidance calls the invitation and the time of the wedding your best guide to formality, and its attire guide says to dress more formally for events after 6 p.m. Third, where the reception is held, because that is where you will spend most of the evening and where most photographs are taken. If the ceremony is on the sand and the dinner is indoors, dress for the dinner and adjust your shoes for the ceremony.
If the invitation names no code at all, use the hour and the venue as your guide. A daytime ceremony on the sand with a reception on a terrace is dressy casual unless told otherwise: a linen or cotton suit, or a sport coat with linen trousers, a collared shirt and loafers. An evening reception at a hotel or a country club is closer to semi-formal: a full suit and a tie. Either way, a jacket is the piece that separates beach wedding attire for men from a vacation outfit. Keep it on through the ceremony, even if you take it off for dinner.
Four beach dress codes, decoded for men
Emily Post does not define "beach formal" or "beach chic". They are hosts' terms, so read them as their nearest standard code adjusted for heat. Casual and black tie are defined, and the table below uses those lists directly. Beach formal sits near formal and semi-formal. The safe move when a code falls between two rows is to dress for the higher one and lighten the fabric, not the formality.

Casual, dressy casual and black tie rows: The Emily Post Institute, Attire Guide, read 22 October 2026 (black tie: white dinner jacket with black tuxedo trousers in summer, the tropics or on a cruise). Beach formal is not an Emily Post code; that row is our editorial reading based on its semi-formal list (dark suit, dress shirt, tie, leather dress shoes) adapted for heat.
When the invitation says beach formal
"Beach formal" asks for a formal level of dress in clothes that can cope with sun, wind and uneven ground. Because no etiquette body defines it, read it as formal or semi-formal attire rebuilt in lighter materials.
For men: a full suit, not separates. Choose linen, a linen-wool blend, cotton or tropical-weight wool, in tan, sand, light or mid-gray, or a mid-blue. Wear a long-sleeved dress shirt and a tie in silk, linen or a light knit. Shoes should be leather or suede loafers or lace-ups, with no-show socks if you skip visible ones. After sunset, move toward the darker end, navy or mid-gray, and keep the tie on. If the invitation pairs "beach" with "black tie," it is black tie: a tuxedo or, in Emily Post's warm-weather variant, a white dinner jacket with black tuxedo trousers.
For women: a formal dress in a fabric that moves, such as chiffon, crepe, silk or a lined cotton, at midi or maxi length. Emily Post's women's lists for semi-formal and black tie (cocktail dresses, long dressy skirts and tops, floor-length gowns) still apply. Beach formal just favors lighter fabrics and colors. Footwear matters most. Stilettos sink into sand, so a block heel, a wedge or a dressy flat sandal is the practical choice. Bring a wrap for the evening breeze. As at any wedding, steer clear of white and ivory. Women's beach outfits are covered in depth on our beach wedding guest dresses page.
For couples dressing together, match the formality, not the color. A linen suit beside a chiffon maxi reads right. Shorts beside a floor-length gown do not.
Fabric, color and fit for the heat
Heat is the real reason men underdress at beach weddings. The answer is a lighter fabric at the same level of formality, not fewer clothes.
• Linen: the most breathable choice and the most beach-appropriate look. It wrinkles quickly and that is expected. A linen-wool or linen-cotton blend wrinkles less and still breathes.
• Cotton and seersucker: crisp and cool. Seersucker is the most casual of the three, so keep it for daytime and dressy casual.
• Tropical-weight wool: looks like a regular business suit but is woven open and light. It is the best choice when the code is formal and the reception is indoors.
• Colors: tan, sand, stone, light and mid-gray, light and mid-blue, and soft greens all suit daylight by the water. Navy is right for evening. A black suit at a beach in daylight looks heavy and absorbs the most heat.
• Shirts: white or pale blue in cotton, linen or a cotton-linen blend. Keep the sleeves long under a jacket. A short-sleeved shirt under a suit jacket is a mistake at any code.
• Fit: a half- or unlined jacket is cooler, and a slightly relaxed cut lets air move. Trousers should still be hemmed cleanly. Rolled cuffs are a casual-code look.
If you are buying men's beach wedding apparel for one wedding and want it to last, buy a two-piece suit in a linen blend or cotton in a mid-tone, such as stone, light gray or mid-blue. It covers dressy casual and beach formal as a suit. The jacket also works over chinos at a rehearsal dinner, and the trousers work with a linen shirt at a casual welcome party. A separate linen shirt, a pair of suede loafers and a pack of no-show socks complete it. Avoid buying a guayabera or a short-sleeved linen shirt as your only option unless the invitation is explicitly casual. Both are excellent at casual codes and too relaxed above them.
Sand, shoes and socks
Feet are where beach outfits go wrong in both directions. Some men wear heavy black oxfords that fill with sand, and some wear flip-flops to a dressy event. Emily Post's casual list includes loafers, sneakers and sandals, so at a casual beach wedding all three are acceptable. Above casual, those options narrow to leather or suede shoes.
Practical rules:
• Loafers are the best all-round beach-wedding shoe. Suede or soft leather, tan or brown in daylight, dark brown or black in the evening.
• Wear no-show socks rather than going bare. They keep the shoe wearable all night and stop blisters.
• Expect sand. Sit down before the reception, empty your shoes and brush off your trouser hems.
• If the couple ask guests to go barefoot for the ceremony, carry your shoes and put them on for the reception.
• Sandals: only at casual codes, and only leather. Rubber flip-flops are beachwear.
• Dress socks and lace-up shoes stay right for black tie and for any reception in an indoor ballroom.
What beach-wedding posts show, and how to pack for a destination
Using the same men's-outfit filter as our other men's guides (any mention of a husband, boyfriend, fiancé, tux, groomsman, men's, guy or male) on the 10,700 r/Weddingattireapproval posts from 16 April to 21 October 2026: of the 681 posts flaired "Barn/Beach/Garden Theme," 76 matched. The suit is mentioned in 22 of them, far ahead of linen and blazers (5 posts each), tuxedos (4), sandals and chinos or khakis (3 each) and shorts (2). Across the whole dataset, only 33 posts use the phrase "beach formal". It is a rare code, which is part of why guests struggle with it. The counts point the same way as the etiquette. Even at outdoor, themed weddings, men are mostly deciding which suit to wear, not whether to wear one.
For a destination wedding, pack for the highest code on the itinerary, usually the wedding dinner, and build down from there. A light suit can be worn as separates at the welcome party, with the jacket over chinos and the trousers with a linen shirt. Bring two dress shirts in case of humidity and one tie even if you think you won't need it. Pack loafers plus a pair of shoes for walking. Carry the suit jacket onto the plane. Linen will wrinkle in transit whatever you do, so hang it in a steamy bathroom on arrival or book the hotel's pressing service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to help you find the perfect wedding guest dress.
Only when the invitation says casual. Emily Post's casual list allows Bermuda shorts depending on occasion and climate. Choose tailored shorts with a collared shirt and loafers. At dressy casual, beach formal or anything dressier, wear trousers.
In daylight: tan, sand, stone, light or mid-gray, or a light-to-mid blue. In the evening: navy or a deeper gray. Avoid an all-white suit unless the couple have said it's welcome, and avoid black in strong sun.
Yes, as a full matching suit with a dress shirt, a tie and leather loafers. For an indoor evening reception, a linen-wool blend or tropical-weight wool in a mid or dark color looks a step more formal and wrinkles less.
At beach formal and at evening receptions, yes. At dressy casual, it's optional: Emily Post lists the tie as optional for that code. At casual, skip it. When unsure, bring one and decide on arrival.
At a casual beach wedding, leather sandals are fine. Sandals are on Emily Post's casual list. Above casual, wear loafers or other leather or suede shoes with no-show socks. Rubber flip-flops are not wedding wear.
The same as anywhere: a tuxedo, formal shirt, black bow tie and patent shoes. Emily Post adds that in summer, in the tropics or on a cruise, a white dinner jacket with black tuxedo trousers is appropriate. Wikipedia's black tie article also notes white dinner jackets are worn in warm climates.
