Which maxi wedding guest dresses suit which dress code?
The Emily Post Institute's attire guide lists garments for each code, and a maxi can fall into several of them.
At white tie, the only women's item is a formal floor-length evening gown, with long gloves optional. This is the one code where a maxi is required rather than allowed, and it must be a true gown: satin, silk, heavy crepe or velvet, fully lined.
At black tie, the first item on the women's list is a formal floor-length evening gown. A maxi in satin, silk, heavy crepe, velvet or sequins with a structured bodice is exactly that. A jersey or printed cotton maxi is not, however long it is.
At black tie optional, the same gown is on the list, along with a dressy cocktail dress, a little black dress or dressy separates.
At semi-formal, which is where Emily Post files cocktail attire, the list is a short afternoon or cocktail dress, a little black dress, a long dressy skirt and top, or dressy separates, with a note to err formal after 6 p.m. A dressy maxi in chiffon or crepe sits comfortably here. A ball-gown maxi with a full skirt or heavy beading overshoots.
At dressy casual, the list is simply a dress, a skirt and dressy top, or a dressy pants outfit. A printed chiffon, viscose or linen-blend maxi with a defined waist sits well here.
At casual weddings, a sundress or a long skirt is on the list, so a cotton, linen or light jersey maxi is ideal.

Give it a waist, then pick the shape
The maxis that look most like wedding outfits have a defined waist, whether from a wrap, a fitted bodice, a belt or an empire seam. Without one, a long, straight, unstructured maxi can look like a beach cover-up. Structure at the top and movement at the bottom is the rule.
A wrap maxi adjusts at the waist, has a V-neck and moves well. In a solid jewel tone or a strong print, it covers garden parties through semi-formal receptions.
An A-line maxi, fitted through the bodice and widening gently from the waist, is the easiest shape for most bodies and every code; in crepe or satin it is formal, in chiffon it suits garden and daytime weddings.
An empire maxi is fitted just below the bust and falls straight to the floor. It puts no pressure on the waist, which makes it comfortable for a long day, and it skims the midsection. In chiffon, it is a dependable choice for beach and destination weddings.
Mermaid and trumpet maxis, fitted through the hip before flaring, are the most formal and body-conscious. They suit evening and formal weddings, and need a supportive fabric such as heavy crepe or stretch satin to hold their shape for hours.
Whatever the shape, check the fabric weight. Budget maxis often fail because the fabric is too thin or clingy; a maxi with enough weight to drape properly looks far more expensive than its price. Rich solid colors such as navy, emerald and burgundy also hide fabric differences better than pale shades.
Get the length right for your shoes and your height
The hem should just brush the top of the shoes you will wear. A maxi that pools on the floor gets stepped on, looks sloppy and drags dirt from the dance floor. Decide on your shoes before you hem the dress, because a heel and a flat put a long hem in very different places.
Many maxis are cut for average height in heels, so if you are petite or plan to wear flats, budget for hemming or look for petite lengths. For petite frames, a V-neck and a waist placed high help lengthen the line, and a clean A-line or column skirt keeps the emphasis vertical; a very full skirt adds width without height. With a correctly hemmed dress, flats look as polished as heels.
For outdoor venues, think about the ground. On grass and in gardens, an ankle-length maxi that clears the ground is more practical than a floor-length one, which soaks up moisture and collects debris. On a beach, choose a hem well above the sand and a fabric that dries quickly. Indoors on a hard floor, any length works, including dresses with a small train.
Fabric sets the formality, length does not
Because every maxi is long, the fabric is what tells the room which dress code you read. Think of it as a ladder.
• Jersey, cotton, linen and smocked viscose: daywear. Right for casual, beach and backyard weddings, and for dressy casual with a polished shoe and bag.

Season moves you along the ladder. A summer black tie wedding can take silk chiffon or georgette in a gown cut; a December one suits velvet or heavier satin. Color helps too: a deep solid such as navy, emerald or burgundy makes a mid-ladder fabric look more formal, while a busy floral pulls even satin toward daytime.
Watch for the bridal-party problem. Long dresses in a single soft color can look like a bridesmaid's dress. If the couple's website shows a bridesmaid palette, choose a color outside it.

Where maxis come up when guests ask for a verdict
In our analysis of 10,700 posts on r/Weddingattireapproval (16 April – 21 October 2026), 287 posts mention a maxi. They are spread across every dress-code flair rather than concentrated at the formal end: the share of posts mentioning a maxi is highest for Special Dress Code (5.2%), Semi Formal/Dressy Casual (3.9%) and Barn/Beach/Garden Theme (3.7%), and lower for Formal (2.3%) and Black/White Tie (2.4%), where posters more often say gown.
Maxi posts also carry different worries from the subreddit as a whole. They are about twice as likely to mention heels or flats (16.4% against 8.0%), more likely to mention an outdoor venue (19.5% against 11.7%), far more likely to describe a floral dress (20.2% against 5.8%), and more likely to ask whether the outfit is too much or too formal (16.7% against 11.5%). In other words, the questions are about shoes, ground and overdressing, which is why the length and fabric sections on this page come first.

Read the listing before you order a long dress
A maxi is the hardest length to buy online, because a few inches decide whether it brushes the shoe or drags on the floor.
• Total length: find the listed length (usually measured from the shoulder or the top of the bodice to the hem) and compare it with the same measurement on your body, standing in the shoes you will wear. If the listing gives no length, ask or skip it.
• Model height and size: a dress shown on a tall model in heels will fall differently on you. Note the model's height if it is listed.
• Fiber and lining: look for the fiber, not just "chiffon" or "satin", and check that a light-colored or chiffon maxi is lined at least to the knee so it is not sheer in sun.
• Slit height: a thigh-high slit changes how formal and how practical the dress is, especially when you sit or walk on stairs.
• Stretch and closure: a side zip or a smocked back makes a fitted maxi easier to wear for a long day; a pull-on jersey maxi reads more casual.
• Returns: try the dress on with the actual shoes as soon as it arrives, and keep the tags on until the hem is decided.
A maxi in each season
