Midi wedding guest dresses by dress code
At casual and garden weddings (see What to wear to a casual wedding), a cotton, linen-blend or printed chiffon midi with flat or block-heel sandals is exactly right, and the length keeps even relaxed fabrics from looking too informal.

At formal and black tie optional weddings (see What does black tie optional mean), a midi needs an unmistakably special fabric: heavy satin, velvet, beading or brocade, with a longer hem that sits nearer the ankle than the knee. At strict black tie, Emily Post's list for women is a floor-length evening gown, a dressy cocktail dress or your dressiest little black dress, so a very dressy midi is acceptable, but a gown is the choice nobody will question.
White tie is the one code a midi cannot meet. Emily Post's white tie list for women is a floor-length evening gown, with no cocktail-dress alternative, so even a beaded midi falls short (see White tie attire).
Time of day moves a midi up or down the scale. Emily Post advises erring formal for semi-formal events after 6 p.m., and the midi is the length where that advice is easiest to follow: the same crepe midi works at a 2 p.m. garden ceremony with flat sandals and a straw clutch, and at a 7 p.m. semi-formal reception with heeled sandals, a metallic bag and statement earrings. Change the accessories before you change the dress.

What guests and invitations say about midis
In our analysis of 10,700 posts on r/Weddingattireapproval (16 April – 21 October 2026), 464 posts mentioned a midi, matched with the regex \bmidis?\b on post titles and text. Measured as a share of each dress-code flair, the midi peaks in the middle of the formality range: 8.0% of Special Dress Code posts, 6.3% of Semi Formal/Dressy Casual, 5.5% of Cocktail or No Dress Code, 4.9% of Formal and 4.6% of Barn/Beach/Garden Theme, falling to 2.0% of Casual and 1.8% of Black/White Tie.
The black tie number is the one to notice. In that flair, 162 posts (12.4%) mentioned floor length (regex \bfloor[- ]length\b) against 24 for midi. Emily Post allows a dressy cocktail dress at black tie, but guests asking for approval in that flair mostly talk about gowns, which is a fair picture of what the room will be wearing.
A second pattern comes from invitations themselves. 62 posts used a phrase such as "midi to floor," "midi or maxi" or "midi or longer" (regex \bmidi(-| )?(to|or|and|-) ?(floor|maxi|longer|ankle|full)), most often under the Formal flair (20 posts) and the Barn/Beach/Garden Theme flair (12). When a couple writes this, read it as a minimum length, not a range to aim for the middle of: anything from just below the knee down to the floor is welcome, and a knee-length or shorter dress is not. A tea length dress counts. A midi that sits right at the knee on you is the risky case, so measure it before the day.

Find the right point on your calf
The leg narrows twice below the knee: just under the kneecap and again above the ankle. A hem that lands at either narrow point lengthens the leg; a hem that cuts across the widest part of the calf shortens it in every photo, whatever the dress.
A shorter midi, just past the knee, looks lighter and slightly less formal, suits cocktail and daytime weddings, and is usually the easier choice for petite frames, because a mid-calf hem can land at the widest point on a shorter leg. A longer midi near the ankle looks more formal and approaches maxi territory without the hemming and sand problems of a floor-length dress, which is why it works at formal and outdoor weddings. Taller figures can carry either.
Try the dress with the shoes you will wear before deciding. A difference of half an inch can move the hem from flattering to awkward, and a tailor can adjust it quickly with you in the shoes.
Listings make this harder, because "midi" covers about a foot of hem and product photos are taken on tall models. Before ordering, find three numbers: the garment length (usually measured from the shoulder seam or the waist to the hem), the model's height, and your own measurement from the same starting point to where you want the hem to land. If the listing gives only the model's height and you are shorter, expect the hem to fall lower on you than in the photo, and check the size chart for a garment length. A dress you plan to hem should be ordered long; a dress that arrives short cannot be fixed.
Shape, fabric and sleeves

Details do the work that extra length would do in a gown. To dress a midi up, look for one strong element: a sculpted or one-shoulder neckline, a satin or beaded bodice, a high slit, pleating that catches light, or a sleeve with volume. To dress it down for a daytime or casual wedding, choose a matte fabric, a print, a simple strap and a lower heel. A midi that tries to carry every detail at once tends to look busy at this length, because there is more skirt than on a cocktail dress and less than on a gown to spread it across.
Shoes carry more weight at this length
A midi shows the lower leg and the whole shoe, so the shoe is part of the outfit. Pointed pumps give the longest line and suit petite guests especially; nude heels lengthen the leg further. Strappy heeled sandals suit spring and summer; block and kitten heels are practical for outdoor venues and long evenings. Sleek heeled ankle boots work with a midi at fall and winter weddings; chunky or casual boots do not. Flat sandals suit casual and beach midis.
The most awkward pairing is a completely flat shoe with a hem at mid-calf, which can cut the leg at an unflattering point. Either shorten the hem slightly or add a small heel.
Season and venue decide the fabric
Emily Post's wedding guest advice names the invitation and the time of the wedding as the best guide to formality, and the season is the best guide to fabric.
Spring and summer: lined chiffon, cotton, linen blends and light crepe, in brighter colors or florals. At an outdoor ceremony in heat, the midi is cooler than a maxi and dressier than a mini, which is why it is the default summer length for so many guests. Choose a lining that breathes; polyester linings under polyester chiffon trap heat.
Fall: crepe, satin and heavier lace, in deeper colors, with a sleeve or a wrap for the evening. A midi is the length that works best with sheer tights, which look deliberate with a hem below the knee and odd under a floor-length dress.
Winter: velvet, brocade, heavy satin and long sleeves, with closed shoes or a sleek heeled boot. Bring a proper coat, because a midi leaves the lower leg exposed between the car and the door.
Venue: on a beach, a midi clears the sand where a maxi drags. On a lawn or at a vineyard, it stays out of damp grass.
