Semi Formal Attire for Men: A Dark Suit, and the Few Things That Change It

The short answer

Semi-formal for men means a dark business suit in navy or charcoal, with a dress shirt, a tie, leather dress shoes and dark dress socks. A matching vest is optional. At a daytime wedding, Emily Post also accepts a blazer with gray flannel trousers and a tie. In the evening it is a dark suit. Skip the tuxedo, and skip jeans and open collars.

Semi formal attire for men is easier to get right than the name suggests. Despite "formal" in the title, it asks for a business suit, not a tuxedo. The Emily Post Institute puts it between office attire and a formal event and gives a short men's list: a dark business suit, an optional matching vest, a dress shirt, a tie, leather dress shoes and dark dress socks. The hard part is the edge cases: an afternoon garden ceremony, a summer heat wave, an invitation that says "semi-formal" when the couple clearly mean something else. Below, each of those is settled, with semi-formal compared side by side against cocktail and dressy casual.

Emily Post's men's list, item by item

The source list is six items long, and each one does a job: • Dark business suit. Matching jacket and trousers in navy or charcoal. "Dark" is the operative word. The same guide, in its business-formal entry, notes that the darker the suit, the more formal it is. • Matching vest (optional). A three-piece is welcome but never required. • Dress shirt. Collared, long-sleeved, pressed. White and light blue are the safe colors, especially in the evening. • Tie. On the list, not optional. Dressy casual is the first level where Emily Post makes the tie optional. • Leather dress shoes. Oxfords, derbies or polished loafers. Not sneakers, not boat shoes. • Dark dress socks. Long enough that no shin shows when you sit. The guide adds one condition: for events after 6 p.m., dress more formally. For men that means the dark end of the suit range, a tie in silk or wool rather than cotton or linen, and black or dark brown lace-ups. It does not mean a tuxedo. That jump only comes at black tie optional, two rungs higher on the same guide. If you own one suit, make it navy or charcoal in a mid-weight wool. That single suit covers every version of men's wear for semi formal, from a 3 p.m. garden ceremony to a 9 p.m. hotel reception, and it also covers cocktail, business formal and black tie optional. Change the shirt and tie and it reads differently each time. A white shirt with a dark silk tie looks evening and formal. A pale-blue shirt with a patterned tie looks daytime and relaxed. Brown shoes soften it, and black shoes sharpen it.

Daytime and evening are two different outfits

The Emily Post Institute's wedding-guest chart is the clearest source on this. For a semiformal wedding it gives men two daytime options, a dark suit or a blazer with gray flannels and a tie, and one evening option, a dark suit. That daytime blazer is the only exception to the full-suit rule anywhere in its semi-formal guidance. It is also the answer to one of the most common questions on this topic: can a man wear a blazer instead of a suit? Yes in daylight, with proper wool trousers and a tie. No after dark. Wikipedia's article on Western dress codes uses the same 6 p.m. dividing line. An outfit that is right at a 2 p.m. ceremony can be underdressed at a 7 p.m. reception. If you are going to both, dress for the later one. At an afternoon semi-formal wedding you can go lighter in color: a mid-gray or mid-blue suit, a patterned tie, brown shoes. At an evening one, keep it dark and plain. The jacket question comes up at every summer reception. A sensible rule is to keep the jacket on through the ceremony, the receiving line and dinner, and take it off once the groom or the hosts take theirs off, usually when the dancing starts. The tie can loosen at the same point. Until then, the outfit you arrived in is the outfit in the photographs.

Semi-formal vs cocktail vs dressy casual, side by side

Sources do not agree on how these codes stack up, and it helps to know why. Emily Post makes no distinction between semi-formal and cocktail. Its guide files cocktail dresses under semi-formal and gives men one list for both. Many hosts and some retailers treat cocktail as slightly dressier than semi-formal, or the reverse. Wikipedia's Western dress codes article goes further: in the traditional, British-influenced classification it summarizes, black tie itself sits under "semi-formal". That is a world away from what a US wedding invitation means. The safe move for men is simple, because the disagreement barely touches menswear. Under semi-formal and cocktail alike, a dark suit and tie is correct. Dressy casual is the first genuine step down. There, a sport coat or blazer with slacks replaces the suit, and the tie becomes optional.

Semi-formal wedding attire for men: venue, season, ceremony

A semi-formal wedding stretches the code in ways a semi-formal dinner does not. Three adjustments cover most invitations: Venue. A house of worship, a hotel or a city restaurant keeps you at the dark-suit center of the code. A barn, vineyard or garden in daylight lets you lighten the color and texture: a mid-gray suit, a linen-blend tie, brown suede shoes. It does not let you drop the jacket during the ceremony. Emily Post suggests asking whether the couple's religion or culture expects a head covering, and whether bare arms or open-toed shoes would offend. For men that mostly means keeping the jacket on in the ceremony and checking the head-covering question before a religious service. Season. A tropical-weight wool or wool-linen suit is the answer to heat. It meets the code and breathes. In winter, flannel in charcoal is about as correct as semi-formal gets. Seersucker and pure linen suits sit at the casual edge. Use them only in daylight, in summer, outdoors. Your role. Guests should not mirror the wedding party. If groomsmen are in gray suits with blush ties, a guest in exactly that outfit will look like he missed a fitting. Pick a different shade or tie. Color and pattern. Within the code there is real room. Subtle stripes, fine checks and textured weaves are all still a business suit. In daylight, mid-blue, mid-gray and, in fall, brown are all within the code. What moves you off it is a suit loud enough to be the first thing anyone notices: bright colors, oversized checks, shiny fabrics. That kind of statement belongs at creative black tie or a party, not a semi-formal wedding where the couple are meant to be the focus. Fit. A well-fitted inexpensive suit beats a loose expensive one. The checks are quick. The jacket should button without pulling into an X, the sleeve should show a little shirt cuff, and the trousers should just touch the shoe with little or no break. A tailor can fix sleeves and hems in a few days, so book it at least a week before the wedding.

Leave these at home

Most semi-formal mistakes come from importing an outfit from the rung above or below. The grid below lists the usual culprits. The pattern is consistent. Anything that belongs to black tie, like a tuxedo, a black bow tie or patent shoes, is too much. Anything that belongs to casual, like jeans, polos, chinos with no jacket or sneakers, is too little. Dark socks and a belt that matches the shoes cost nothing and are noticed when they are missing.

The tuxedo question, and what 126 men's posts show

Is a tuxedo ever right at semi-formal? No. Emily Post introduces the tuxedo at black tie optional and makes it standard at black tie. At semi-formal it reads as a misread invitation, or as an attempt to dress like the groom. A black suit is a borderline case. It is acceptable, but navy and charcoal do the job better and won't be mistaken for a tux in the evening. In our analysis of 10,700 posts on r/Weddingattireapproval (16 April – 21 October 2026), we flagged posts whose title or text mentions a man's outfit or a male partner (husband, boyfriend, fiancé, tux, groomsman, men's, guy or male). Of the 1,307 posts flaired "Semi Formal/Dressy Casual," 126 matched. The suit leads, mentioned in 29 of them. Tuxedos come up in 11, as often as the word navy, which is a sign of how many people are unsure whether semi-formal means the formal kind. Jeans and blazers appear in 7 posts each. Those are the dressy-casual boundary questions, and the answers sit in the comparison table above.

A five-minute check before you leave

Run through these in order. If every answer is yes, you are dressed for the semi formal dress code, for guys or anyone in a suit. 1. Is the jacket part of a matching suit? (Or, at a daytime event only, a blazer with wool dress trousers?) 2. Is the suit dark if the event starts after 6 p.m.? 3. Is there a tie on, unless the hosts have said ties are optional? 4. Are the shoes leather dress shoes, polished, with dark socks? 5. Does anything you're wearing belong to the rung above, like a tux, a bow tie or patent shoes, or the rung below, like jeans, a polo or sneakers? If so, swap it. When the invitation leaves room for doubt, look for clues elsewhere. The card stock, the venue, the hour and the wedding website say more than the two words on the card. If there is still doubt, wear the dark suit and tie and carry the tie in a pocket if the evening turns relaxed. Semi formal attire for men is forgiving that way: one navy suit, worn well, covers almost every version of it.

In daylight, yes. Emily Post lists a blazer with gray flannels and a tie for a daytime semiformal wedding. In the evening, wear a matching dark suit. A blazer with jeans or chinos and no tie drops to dressy casual.
Yes. A tie is on Emily Post's semi-formal men's list, and the tie only becomes optional at dressy casual. If the hosts write "ties optional" for a daytime outdoor wedding, you can skip it, but keep the suit and dress shoes.
Yes, a black business suit is acceptable. Navy or charcoal usually look better and are less likely to be read as a tuxedo stand-in at night or as severe in daylight. Pair black with a white shirt and a tie with some color.
