Garden Party Attire for a Wedding: What Women and Men Should Wear

The Emily Post Institute's attire guide, the reference most etiquette writers work from, lists casual, dressy casual, semi-formal, black tie optional, black tie and white tie. It has no entry for "garden party." That is why the phrase confuses people: it describes the setting and the mood, and leaves the level of dressiness to everything else on the invitation. Read it with three clues. • A modifier. "Garden party formal" or "formal garden party" asks for the dressier end, roughly formal or black tie optional transposed to daylight. "Garden party" on its own usually sits between dressy casual and semi-formal. • The time. Emily Post's guest-attire guidance says "the wedding invitation and the time of the wedding will be your best guide to its formality," and its attire guide adds that semi-formal events after 6 p.m. call for erring on the formal side. A garden ceremony at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner under a marquee is not a lunch on the lawn. • The couple's own words. A wedding website that mentions grass, a tent or uneven ground is telling you about shoes; one that mentions a seated dinner or a band is telling you about formality. Guests clearly read the phrase in different ways. In our analysis of 10,700 posts on r/Weddingattireapproval (16 April – 21 October 2026), 369 posts used the words "garden party." Only 152 of them were filed under the forum's "Barn/Beach/Garden Theme" flair. The rest were filed under a formal code: 51 under Formal, 41 under Semi Formal/Dressy Casual, 34 under Cocktail or No Dress Code and 12 under Black/White Tie. Another 41 sat under "Is this too white?" One invitation phrase sent posters to five different formality buckets. If yours carries no modifier, the safe move is semi-formal daywear: a dress you could wear to a cocktail-hour reception, or a suit worn with or without a tie.

Once you know the level, Emily Post's women's lists do the rest. Casual allows a sundress or a long or short skirt. Dressy casual allows a dress, a skirt and dressy top, or a dressy pants outfit. Semi-formal lists a short afternoon or cocktail dress, a little black dress, a long dressy skirt and top, or dressy separates. Black tie optional adds the floor-length evening gown and the dressy cocktail dress. The garden changes the fabric and the length, not the list. Fabric. Chiffon and georgette drape well and stay comfortable in warm weather. Cotton voile, eyelet and linen blends suit casual and dressy casual gardens if a detail such as smocking, embroidery or a wrap waist lifts them above daywear. Lightweight crepe works for semi-formal gardens and creases less than linen. Heavy satin, velvet and brocade trap heat at a spring or summer garden wedding; save them for a late-fall marquee. Length. A midi is the easiest garden length: dressy enough for most invitations and clear of damp lawn. For garden party formal, a maxi or gown works if it stops at or just above the ankle, so the hem does not collect grass and soil on the walk from the ceremony to the reception. A long dress that pools on the floor indoors will drag outdoors. Separates and jumpsuits. Dressy separates appear on Emily Post's semi-formal and black tie optional lists, so a silk blouse with a floral midi skirt, or a jumpsuit in crepe, is not a dodge. It can be the more practical choice on a windy lawn.

Men get less help from the search results, which are mostly dress shops, so start from Emily Post's men's lists and then lighten them for daylight. For a garden party with no modifier, the dressy casual list fits: a seasonal sport coat or blazer with slacks, and a dress shirt, button-down, open-collar shirt or polo, with the tie optional. For an evening start or a semi-formal invitation, the semi-formal list applies: a dark business suit, a dress shirt, a tie and leather dress shoes. For daytime weddings, Emily Post's guest-attire guidance gives a dark suit with a conservative shirt and tie for formal, and a dark suit or a blazer with grey flannels and a tie for semiformal. "Garden party formal" therefore means a full suit and a tie. A tuxedo only enters the picture if the invitation says black tie. The garden translation is about cloth and color. A suit in lightweight wool, cotton or a linen blend keeps the formality of a suit while staying wearable in sun. A mid-blue, grey or a darker tan reads more formal than a pale cream or an all-white suit, which competes with the bride in the same way a white dress does. Linen creases by design, so it reads relaxed: right for garden party on its own, wrong for garden party formal. A dress shirt in white or light blue works at every level. Shoes need the same thought as women's heels. Leather loafers, suede loafers and derbies with a rubber or studded sole cope with grass better than slick leather soles, which slide on damp lawns. Florals are the natural garden print, and the posts bear that out: 15.5% of the 876 posts in our dataset that mention a garden also mention a floral, against 5.8% of all posts. The choice of floral sets the mood. Watercolor blooms and botanical prints look romantic, a large floral on a dark ground looks more evening, and small ditsy prints read casual. Toile and medium polka dots also suit estate gardens. For men, a floral tie or pocket square is the usual place for the print. The trap is the background. A floral on a white or cream ground can photograph as a white dress from a distance, and pale pastels such as ice blue, butter yellow and the palest pinks can do the same in bright midday sun. Garden posts mention white, ivory or cream slightly more often than posts overall (23.6% against 20.3%), and 85 garden posts were filed under "Is this too white?" Choose a print whose ground is a clear color, or a solid with enough pigment to read as a color against greenery. Mid-tone solids such as sage, dusty blue, rose, lavender, coral and a stronger yellow sit well against hedges and lawns. Very dark solids look heavy at a midday garden wedding but are fine at an evening one, where a black cocktail dress or a charcoal suit fits as well as anywhere.

The ground decides the shoes. Posts that mention a garden are about three times as likely as the average post to mention grass, a lawn or sinking (3.8% against 1.2%). Thin stilettos sink into turf and catch between paving stones, so choose a heel with surface area: a block heel of moderate height, a wedge or an espadrille wedge keeps you steady and still looks dressed up. Embellished flat sandals and pointed flats suit casual and dressy casual gardens. Clear heel protectors, the small caps that widen a stiletto's tip, help if you want a slim heel. If the ceremony is on grass and the reception moves indoors, carrying a second pair is easier than an evening in lawn shoes. Avoid suede if rain is forecast. Sun and heat come next. Wider straps, short sleeves or a light jacket give some protection during an afternoon ceremony; apply sunscreen before you dress so it does not mark the fabric. Check the lining on pale and printed dresses, because sun from behind can make an unlined chiffon see-through in photographs. Men can take the jacket off at the reception once the couple or the hosts have. Then the evening. Garden weddings run long and outdoor temperatures drop after sunset, so bring a wrap, cardigan or cropped jacket that suits the dress. Hats and fascinators suit spring and summer gardens; keep the brim modest during the ceremony so guests behind you can see. Many garden venues have a tent or an indoor backup, so pick an outfit that looks right in both.

Most garden outfits are bought online, and the listing tells you more than the photo. • Fabric composition. "Chiffon" can mean a fine silk or a heavy polyester. Polyester chiffon is easy to care for but holds heat; look for a cotton or viscose lining if the dress will be worn in sun. • Lining. The listing should say lined or fully lined. If it does not, assume a pale or printed dress will show through against the light. • Length in inches. A maxi listed at 55 inches from shoulder to hem on a model of 5'9" will drag on someone shorter. Compare the stated length with your own shoulder-to-ankle measurement, in the shoes you will wear. • Background color of a print. Zoom in. A "floral" with a cream ground is the most common too-white problem. • Return window. Order early enough to try the outfit on outdoors, in daylight, in the shoes, and still return it.
