How plus sizing is defined, and why the number is not enough
In the U.S. standards, plus is a separate figure type, not just bigger numbers. ASTM International's table for the plus women's figure type (ASTM D6960) covers sizes 14W through 40W; the regular misses table (ASTM D5585) runs from 00 to 20. The point of a separate figure type is that a W pattern can be drafted for a fuller figure's own proportions instead of scaling a misses pattern up.
Retail labels blur that line. Nordstrom's plus-size wedding guest dress filter, for example, groups "14W, 1X, 18, XXL" as one size step and "28W+, 4X+" at the top of the range, so a 1X from one brand and a 14W from another sit side by side even though their charts differ. ASTM describes its own tables as body measurements that designers use as a baseline before adding ease, fabric and styling, which is why two dresses with the same label can fit noticeably differently.
The practical rule: measure your bust at its fullest, your natural waist and your hips at their widest, and compare each with the size chart on the listing you are buying, not with your usual size. If your measurements fall in different sizes, buy for the largest one; a tailor can take a dress in, but cannot add fabric that is not there.
Silhouettes that give you a waist
An A-line is fitted through the bodice and widens from the waist, so it marks the waist and flows over the hips and thighs. Look for a bodice with real support, such as internal boning, a structured bust or a lining with some weight, rather than relying on the fabric alone. Scuba, heavy crepe and structured satin hold the shape better than light chiffon. In a midi length, an A-line covers everything from dressy casual to cocktail.
A true wrap dress, not a faux wrap sewn shut, lets you set the tightness at the waist yourself, which helps when your bust, waist and hip fall in different sizes. The V-neck draws a vertical line.
A fit-and-flare stays close through the waist and kicks out lower, which gives a more dramatic shape for cocktail and evening weddings.
Bodycon is also an option if that is what you like to wear. It needs a heavy stretch fabric that smooths rather than clings, and ruching or built-in shaping helps; a thin jersey shows every line.

An empire waist sits just below the bust and falls freely over the stomach, with no seam or pressure at the natural waist. It is the most comfortable option for a long day.
A true wrap crosses diagonally over the midsection and ties where you choose, so it adjusts to you instead of pulling across the widest point.
Diagonal or asymmetric ruching gathers fabric across the stomach so the surface has texture and does not show every contour. Horizontal gathers right at the waist tend to add bulk instead.
If you have an apron belly, where the lower stomach folds over the pubic area, the seam position matters more than the cut name. A waist seam or elastic that lands on the fold digs in and rolls when you sit. Choose a seam above it (empire or a high waist) or no waist seam at all (a shift or trapeze cut with drape), and a skirt that falls straight from the widest point rather than curving under it. A smooth slip or high-waisted shorts under the dress stop fabric catching on the fold.
Fabric weight matters more than color. A mid-weight crepe, ponte or scuba drapes over the stomach; a thin, stretchy jersey or a slippery satin clings. Fit the widest part of your body first: a dress that fits at the bust and stomach can be taken in elsewhere, while one that strains across the stomach will pull and ride up all day. Sit down in the fitting room. If the fabric pulls across the front, size up.
What each dress code asks for
The rules are the same for every guest. The Emily Post Institute's attire guide lists, for women: a floor-length evening gown, a dressy cocktail dress or your dressiest little black dress at black tie; a short afternoon or cocktail dress, a little black dress, a long dressy skirt and top, or dressy separates at semi-formal, which is where Emily Post files cocktail attire; a dress, a skirt and dressy top, or a dressy pants outfit at dressy casual; and a sundress or a long or short skirt at casual. For semi-formal events later than 6 in the evening, it says to err on the side of formality.
In practice:
• Black tie: a floor-length gown or a structured cocktail dress in satin, velvet or heavy crepe, ideally with internal support for a long evening.
• Black tie optional: the same gown, or a dressy midi or dressy separates, which Emily Post also lists for this code.
• Cocktail and semi-formal: a knee or midi dress in crepe, satin or heavy jersey; fit-and-flare, A-line and wrap all work.
• Dressy casual and casual: an A-line, wrap or flowing maxi in a breathable fabric, or a dressy pants outfit.
Dressy separates and pantsuits are on several of these lists, and they solve the most common plus-size fit problem outright: a top and a bottom in two different sizes. Emily Post's wedding guest guide also lists a dressy pantsuit for semi-formal evening weddings.
What plus size guests ask about, in numbers
In our analysis of 10,700 posts on r/Weddingattireapproval (16 April – 21 October 2026), 140 posts identify the poster as plus size or curvy, or give a size of 16 or above. Compared with all posts, they are about twice as likely to talk about sleeves, arms or a cover-up (17.1% against 8.3%), three times as likely to mention a bra, bust or support (9.3% against 2.9%), and more likely to name a midi (11.4% against 4.3%) or a maxi, floor-length dress or gown (15.7% against 9.3%).
So the questions are about coverage and construction, not about which colors are "allowed". That is why the listing checklist below starts with support and sleeves, and why the comfort section covers bras and chafing.

Retailer category pages for plus size wedding guest dresses are mostly grids with size filters and no fit advice, so the product listing has to answer your questions. A pattern drafted for a curvy body is built differently from a straight-size pattern graded up: a wider armhole, more room through the upper arm, a longer bodice and a waist seam placed where a fuller figure actually narrows. The armholes and sleeves are where a graded-up pattern is most often tight, so read the arm measurement if one is given.
The Federal Trade Commission's online shopping advice is to check, before you buy, whether you can return the item for a full refund, who pays return shipping, how many days you have and whether there is a restocking fee. That matters if you plan to order two sizes and send one back.

Wear any color, then choose fabric for the season
The old advice to stick to dark solids is a preference, not a rule. Plan for comfort over a long day
Chafing is the practical problem nobody mentions on the invitation. Anti-chafe shorts, thigh bands or an anti-friction balm on inner thighs and underarms prevent it through dancing and warm weather; slip shorts or bike shorts under the dress are a simple fix.
A well-fitted bra changes how any bodice looks, so wear the one you will wear on the day when you try the dress on, and check that the straps and back of the dress cover it. Shapewear is your choice. If it makes you feel more confident and you can wear it for hours, use it; if it feels restrictive, choose a dress with built-in structure instead.
